ABOUT OR ROTH

Or is a visual artist based in New York City. Her work is inspired by the dynamic lines, rich detail, and narrative focus of late 19th century illustrations, with subjects informed by her passion for historic costumes, fancy typography, folktales from around the world, and places in which human-made beauty is touched by the wild.

A scribbler of character art and speculative fiction from a young age, Or began her art career at Parsons School of Design, where she completed the Graphic Design Continuing Education Certificate program with a strong focus on typography and digital illustration. After studying art independently for years, she continues honing her drawing skills in traditional mediums with classes in the New York Academy of Art and Drawing New York in the National Arts Club.

Pursuing art as a second career following a decade in online risk analytics, Or now uses her technical skills and her BA in Computational Linguistics to wrangle a variety of digital tools such as Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign, and Procreate, as well as to troubleshoot pesky Risograph errors. She is fluent in English and Hebrew, with a layperson's grasp of French, Japanese, and Spanish. Her Jewish urban fantasy novel Sparks, co-authored with writer and literary editor Michal Bassan, was published in 2024.
